Tell us a little about yourself!
I am a veterinary student in Ontario! I have a particular interest in OneHealth, which is the concept that human, animal and environmental health are strongly interconnected.
Tell us about your #MakeWaves project.
I would love to be able to use the money to buy pet food to be able to distribute it to homeless and vulnerably housed communities in Toronto.
I know that a lot of these people struggle to feed their pets and they are likely struggling even more-so now with the COVID-19 crisis.
I would love to be able to distribute bags of food to some of these people - while maintaining an appropriate physical distance of course. I would distribute to people on the street or to shelters where these people may be staying or accessing help!
Who / What inspired you?
I am hoping to help the homeless and vulnerably housed community in Toronto, alone with their pets. This is to contribute to OneHealth, the concept that human, animal and environmental health are strongly interconnected.
I was inspired by projects being held by Community Veterinary Outreach in Vancouver and Ottawa that are doing the same thing. I would love to be able to do this in my community as well! I think this project can have a huge impact, not only on people, but on their pets as well.
I think that a lot of people in these communities were struggling already to sustain themselves and feed their pets as well, and COVID-19 has only put more strain on them. For many people, their pets are their only family members, their closest friends and their support systems, and it means the world to them to be able to provide adequate food to these pets, even when the people are struggling to feed themselves.
